My research and consultancy experiences are in the geology and utilisation of Earth Resources, particularly Industrial Minerals, including construction materials, and some metalliferous ores. These are complemented by interests in applied mineralogy and petrology, and associated analytical techniques. I have considerable geological fieldwork experience in the UK and internationally.

Experience Summary
Academic and research experience include departmental head and academic leader; research project leader and manager; member of many university committees; teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in mining geology, ore deposit geology, industrial minerals and rocks, mineral processing, construction materials, mineralogy and crystallography, geophysics, geochemistry, geological mapping and fieldwork; supervision of more than 250 MSc and 13 PhD research students.  Founder and former Director of MSc course in Industrial Mineralogy and former Director of MSc in Mining Geology.

Over 110 research and related publications. Numerous consultancy reports mostly on industrial minerals (market studies; assessment of resources; technology of use; regional resource studies; construction raw materials), mining and other mineral wastes, ore mineralogy, and geodiversity/geoconservation. Expert witness evidence in High Court cases involving geology and mineralogy.

Particular industrial minerals experience includes: clays (kaolin, bentonite, sepiolite, brick clay), talc, magnesite, serpentinite; limestone, dolomite, silica sand, potash; fluorite, barite, feldspar; mica; cement raw materials; sand and gravel; crushed rock aggregates; slate. Also experience in iron ores; manganese ores; alluvial gold, chromite, PGEs and porphyry systems. Mineralogical analysis by optical microscopy, XRD, SEM, EPMA and geochemical analysis by XRF.

Projects have been funded by NERC, ESRC, MIRO, MIRO/MIST, NATO, European Community (ESF and TEMPUS), Arts and Humanities Research Board, World Bank, British Council, British Geological Survey, Cornwall Council, Natural England, English Heritage, several overseas government bodies and many mining and minerals companies.
